Symptom of silent disease common among celebs can actually be spotted in your eyes

In recent years, a potentially transformative disease has gained significant attention in the media, primarily due to its prevalence among celebrities.

Last month, Justin Timberlake was added to the extensive list of celebrities who have received a diagnosis, stating that the condition left him experiencing 'intense nerve pain or, at times, extreme fatigue and illness'.

Previously, well-known figures like Justin Bieber, Bella Hadid, Amy Schumer, and Ben Stiller have openly discussed their similar health struggles, along with Miranda Hart, Kelly Osbourne, and Avril Lavigne.

We are discussing Lyme disease - a bacterial infection that often remains under the radar due to its obscure and frequently contradictory symptoms, one of which impacts the patient's vision.

For those not familiar with the ailment, Lyme disease is transmitted when a person is bitten by a tick, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is believed to affect approximately 476,000 Americans annually.

The most common sign that someone has been bitten by these insects is a 'bullseye' erythema migrans rash. This typically appears in the days following the bite, but in some instances, it might surface up to three months later.

Upon noticing the rash, doctors advise scheduling an appointment promptly to be prescribed the necessary antibiotics to combat the troublesome infection.

Many people who do not realize they've been bitten often endure a range of flu-like symptoms, particularly fever, headache, and severe fatigue. In the most serious cases, Lyme disease can lead to heart complications, known as Lyme carditis.

As mentioned, however, some patients are diagnosed with the condition after noticing changes in their vision.

Medical News Today recently explained that Lyme disease can infiltrate the body's central nervous system, potentially causing significant sensory issues.

This may result in a newfound sensitivity to light and sound, as well as other visual disturbances.

Consequently, a patient might experience sensory overload.

An individual who recently experienced these unsettling symptoms wrote an article for Global Lyme Alliance, recounting experiences of 'bright flashing lights, fast-moving images on a screen, or even fluorescent lighting in a store'.

As noted, in addition to affecting the eyes, Lyme disease can also impact the ears, leading to hearing issues, including sudden onset or progressive hearing loss as the primary or sole symptom.
