Outrage as people trusted man to cremate pets only to 'discover shocking truth'

A Pittsburgh man has caused widespread heartbreak after being entrusted with the cremation of beloved pets.

Our pets hold a special place in our hearts, becoming cherished members of our homes for many years.

Whether they are dogs, cats, bunnies, or even rodents and birds, pets truly become part of our families for their entire lives.

When the unfortunate day comes when they pass, finding someone trustworthy to handle their remains is crucial.

This is especially important for cremations or burials.

Unfortunately, thousands of families were devastated to learn that the individual they trusted with their pets' remains was a con artist of the worst kind.

Patrick Roy Vereb, the alleged owner of Vereb Funeral Home and Eternity Pet Memorial in the US, is accused of discarding pets in landfills and providing families with ashes that are not from their pets.

Over 6,500 grieving pet owners unknowingly fell victim to Vereb, with suspicions arising when his employees noticed inconsistencies.

In July 2023, they began to suspect that the business was taking in more animals than it was actually cremating.

“Pittsburgh’s pet community is very close-knit,” a local vet technician told Vocal Media. “When the discrepancies surfaced, people started to ask questions.”

When investigators began to question him, Vereb ended up confessing everything.

He admitted that for years, he had been discarding pets in landfills and sometimes providing owners with ashes from other animals to give them temporary comfort.

“Frankly, it’s difficult to comprehend,” said Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday Jr. after his office investigated the discredited business owner.

He added: “Thousands of families paid for dignity, but Vereb chose greed over compassion.”

Vereb revealed that between 2021 and 2024, people paid for private cremations but received ashes from unknown animals instead.

For those who bought a ‘common grave’ burial, their pets were often discarded in landfills.

He also ceased using cemeteries and opted for landfill sites instead.

Vereb now faces numerous charges of deceptive business practices and theft by deception, including ‘failing to deliver promised cremation/burial services,’ ‘charging customers for services never performed,’ and ‘illegally disposing of animals in landfills.’

In the wake of his deceit, the community has been left in shock.

“This isn’t just a crime—it’s a betrayal of trust,” Dr. Emily Carter, a local veterinarian, expressed to the outlet. “Pet owners deserve closure, not deceit.”

Vereb is scheduled to appear in court on May 9th, although he didn’t serve any jail time after his initial court appearance in April and was released on bail.

Due to the absence of state laws mandating transparency in Pittsburgh’s pet funeral industry’s cremation processes, local lawmakers are advocating for change.

“It’s time we treat pets with the same respect as humans,” said Councilwoman Lena Torres. “No more loopholes.”
