Amanda Knox’s ‘gripping’ true crime drama has sparked important debate about victim Meredith Kercher

The latest crime drama focusing on Amanda Knox's wrongful conviction after the murder of Meredith Kercher has ignited a significant online discussion.

This eight-episode biographical series on Hulu and Disney+, titled The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, premiered on August 20, featuring Grace Van Patten in the role of Knox.

Produced by the 38-year-old Knox herself, the TV show depicts her battle for justice following her wrongful conviction in the heartbreaking death of her roommate Kercher in 2007.

For those who may not know the tragic background, Meredith, aged 21, was a British exchange student from the University of Leeds studying in Perugia, Italy.

She was tragically discovered dead on the floor of the room in the house she shared with the American student, Knox, then 20, and two other Italian women. Knox, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, was initially convicted of her murder, as was Italian native Ruby Guede.

However, Knox spent nearly four years in prison for a crime she insisted she didn't commit before she and her boyfriend's convictions were overturned in 2001.

The legal saga didn't end there, as the duo was convicted again in a 2014 retrial, before ultimately being acquitted by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015 due to 'stunning flaws' in the investigation and insufficient evidence (via People).

In the meantime, Guede served 13 years of a 16-year sentence for the murder and was released in 2021.

Knox has been outspoken about her ordeal with imprisonment and her legal struggle for freedom, having authored several books on the subject.

In 2016, a Netflix documentary titled Amanda Knox was released, featuring interviews where Knox elaborated on her story. However, this new drama series has stirred controversy, with some feeling it overemphasizes Knox rather than the murder victim, Meredith.

A Reddit user commented: "The issue is that it once again shifts focus away from Meredith, the true victim," while another added: "I can't believe they are making another Amanda Knox movie/show..."

Conversely, some have defended Knox, arguing that she is also a 'victim' and has the right to tell her story.

One Redditor stated: "Amanda was a victim of wrongful imprisonment, and the narrative reflects that. It does no justice to sensationalize & accuse someone of murder who didn’t commit it."

Another added: "Amanda is also a victim. Her experience shouldn't be dismissed," while a third noted: "This story focuses on Amanda’s journey. It doesn't detract from Meredith's story."

Meredith Kercher's family has expressed their views on the subject, with their lawyer recently issuing a statement against the show for dramatizing the tragedy, as reported by The Mirror.

Attorney Francesco Maresca told the publication: "The key point is that Amanda Knox clearly wants this case to persist. It would be respectful to see a program or TV show where everything is reconstructed, remembering the life and smile of the dear Meredith."

He continued: "Instead, once more, we witness an attempt to reshuffle the narrative, where the trailer declares, ‘Amanda fights tirelessly to prove her innocence and regain her freedom’. The emphasis, again, is on Knox.”

When the series began filming last November, Meredith's sister Stephanie Kercher told The Guardian: “Meredith will always be remembered for her own fight for life, and even in her absence, her love and personality shine brightly.

"We will forever feel this indescribable void, but we strive to live up to Meredith’s standards with dignity.”

She added: "Our family has endured so much, and it's difficult to see how this serves any purpose."

Meanwhile, Knox told Newsweek that she hopes Kercher's family can find some healing in the series and her recent second autobiography, titled Free: My Search for Meaning.

She expressed: "I hope they will see the value in my attempt to reveal the truth of what happened to Meredith by sharing the truth of what happened to me."
